Choosing Colours Online

How to select the right paint colour online

Choosing a paint colour and purchasing paint online can be a challenging task as on-screen colour representations are not necessarily precise representations of actual paint colours due to variance in screen calibrations. When choosing a colour online, try to manage your expectations. Knowing that there always will be a variance in colour accuracy can certainly help.

Here are some things to consider:

  • When buying paint for a larger project, order a single gallon before you commit to multiple gallons.  Test the colour on a small section of the wall to make sure it is right for your room.  While this will require an extra order and pick-up, it can give you peace of mind.  You can ask the store to add the colour strip card with your chosen colour to your order (and maybe the two chips next to it).  From our experience, most customers choose a lighter colour on the same Dulux stripe card or simply move to a colour on a chip adjacent to it.
  • Think about other projects that might benefit from a coat of paint in case the first gallon is not quite right since, unfortunately, we will not be able to refund your purchase if the colour does not work for your project.  Your closets, basement, garage or child’s dorm room may thank you for it!
  • Stay with “safe” colours.  A great place to start is the Dulux Perfect Palette.  This curated selection of designer colours has proven to be very popular and all 100 Perfect Palette colours perfectly complement one another, making it easy to choose another paint colour for your next room. • Visualize some of your colour choices in different rooms or use a picture of your own room.  Start by using the Perfect palette colours in the Dulux Paint visualizer (simply choose it in our curated colour collection after you select an image in the first step). When choosing colours online, a curated selection of colours makes it much simpler to narrow down your paint colour short-list.  Open colour visualizer
  • Ask some friends for their favorite paint colours and then do a little more research online. Please don’t visit your friends in person, of course, and adhere to social distancing recommendations
  • Use some of our top colours shown in Dulux's inspirational colour cards. Browse the PDF of the brochures and import all colours into our visualizer
